Sustainability Initiatives

Your Sodexo Campus Dining Team is dedicated to sustainability.  We know we can all work together to make a positive impact right here at Franklin & Marshall College.  In addition to the many initiatives we take on as a company, we have implemented the following programs specific to F&M.


Vegan Report Card 2017

More than 1,400 universities across the U.S. were surveyed in 2017 for peta2's Vegan Report Card. Seventy percent of them now offer at least one vegan option on their dining hall menu, and 19 percent now have all-vegan dining stations—by comparison with just 9 percent in 2016. Franklin & Marshall's dining services is proud to have received a B grading in 2017.

We are proud to compost daily at the Restaurants at Ben Franklin (RBF). Beginning in January 2014, we partnered with Franklin & Marshall College, their facilities team and Terra-Gro, Inc. Graywood Farms Facility.
Since this initiative began, over 230 tons of waste has been composted! Thanks to the support and cooperation of the entire Franklin & Marshall community and our dining staff, we have been able to take steps to take our sustainability efforts to a new level.

Composted materials from The Restaurants at Ben Franklin were used on our own Sponaugle-Williamson Field, Full Circle Garden and F&M Community Garden! Zime, Flavors at LS&P, and Steinman's Center were all added to the program in 2016-2017.

Organics (KIVO)

Our KIVO (Kosher, International, Vegan, Organic) Restaurant offers Dairy and Meat Features to students with special nutritional needs Sunday thru Friday. KIVO is certified by Star-K with a Full Time Mashgiach on site.

Local (All Locations)

The majority of our produce is purchased locally.  In addition, our other local partners include Hershey’s Chocolate in Hershey, PA, Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, Kegel's Produce, Lancaster Food Company and Harrisburg Dairies in Harrisburg, PA.

Fair Trade (All Locations)

All brands of our coffee are fair trade certified. Flavors at LS&P features Aspretto coffee.  Aspretto, offered in The Restaurants at Ben Franklin, is a premium coffee that is our answer to the market's call for a sustainable, “green” product. It is fair-trade purchased and trans-fair certified. Everything that touches the product is green, from the 10% PCF cups to the renewable resource stirrers to the fair trade sugar wrapped in recyclable paper and printed with vegetable dye.

Biodegradable Plates, Containers, Straws, Lids, Cups & Utensils (All Locations)

All locations use spudware utensils (80 % potato starch and 20% soy). You will find a combination of paper, bagasse (Sugar resin pulp) and PLA (Ceraplast corn bi-product) in all locations for our plates, containers, cups, lids and straws.

Trayless Dining

We are a trayless campus at Franklin & Marshall. Customers without trays typically waste less food and beverages. It is also a healthier approach to eating, as we all know that at times our eyes are bigger than our stomach. Trayless dining also reduces the amount of water and detergents needed to wash trays - and saves energy too!

Recycled Napkins (All Locations)

Green Seal Chemicals (All Locations)

Over Winter Break 2007-2008, we converted the dish machine chemicals in all locations over to Eco Labs Geo System line which has a green seal rating.

Reusable Energy (All Locations)

Our Deep Fat Fryer Oils are recycled for Bio-Fuel.

Trans-Fat Free Cooking Oils (All Locations)

Non-hydrogenated fryer and cooking oils make good vegetable fuel and is better for the body.

Cage-Free Shell Eggs (The Restaurants at Ben Franklin)

Recycling (All Locations)

We participate in the campus’ recycling program by recycling all cardboard, plastic bottles and aluminum.

Bulk Coffee Condiments (The Restaurants at Ben Franklin)

Bulk Condiments
We use bulk condiments whenever possible to eliminate unnecessary waste including individual packets, shipment packaging and help conserve space. We proudly serve Heinz Brand Condiments.

Bulk Packaging
We use bulk packaging whenever possible with all of our shipped needs to help lessen the amount of unnecessary waste.
